Gamzee Makara looked out one of the large windows in his house. The storm was relenting, and his father still wasn't home yet. He pressed his hand to the cool glass and sighed, looking at his reflection. Despite the painted- on grin of his clown make- up, he was frowning. He started humming and smiled again, sauntering over to the couch, where he flopped down with a yawn. He raked a hand through his chestnut brown hair and thought of what to do. In a moment of genious, he slid his favorite game into his xBox and started playing, thumbs flying across the buttons and joysticks. Just as a loud thunderclap echoed through the community, his doorbell rang. He jumped, startled by the loud noise. It reminded him of those days when Terezi would sneak up behind him at school and honk one of his own horns in his ear. For a blind girl, she was pretty sneaky. He wondered if she really saw everything through her cane. The idea seemed prepostorous. What if she had some kind of heightened senses from losing one of the others, like those dragons she loved so much. The doorbell rang again. He'd spaced out, which was not unusual for him. He set down his controller and got up, walking over to the door. When he pulled it open, little Nepeta Leijon stood on his doorstep, black hair plastered to her head. She seemed to be wringing out her hat, but looked up and grinned when he opened the door. "Hi Gamzee!" she squeaked, the bit her lip. "Is it okay if I hang out here? I was walking home, and I got caught
in this." she waved her hand behind her. She smiled again as Gamzee threw the door open all the way, and spread his arms wide.
"My home is your home, sis! C'mon in, I can get you some blankets and towels if you need to warm up and dry."
Nepeta bouned in, making sure to stay in a small spot of carpet so as to not soak too much of it as rain ran off her jacket. Gamzee jogged up the stairs to the linen closet, and grabbed all the fluffiest towels he could find. He threw them down, watching as they unfurled in mid- air. A squeaky giggle came from downstairs, muffled. It suggested that a towel had landed on her head. "Thanks, Gam!" she cried. He chuckled and walked back to the closet, pulling out blankets for his best sister. He didn't throw these, just dropped them on the couch before walking back over to Nepeta. She had shrugged out of her too- long overcoat, and had it hung on the coatrack with a towel under it. She was also standing on a towel, soaking up any water that had gone into the carpet. She gently pulled of her shoes and rested them on the towel under her jacket. Gamzee leaned against the wall opposite her, and was smiling as she crouched down next to her backpack. She opened the top of it and peered inside, making little cooing noises. Gamzee walked over to her, bending down to look in over her head. A small black kitten was ensconced in the depths of the bag, looking  damp and shaken. Gamzee reached a hand out, scooping the creature up. Nepeta looked at him with wide eyes, wary of the unexpected behavior swings he was capable of. But he just picked up a towel and sat down, wrapping the kitten in it and gently petting the baby feline through the layers of fabric. He waved Nepeta away with a grin,
and she smiled back and finished drying her pants off.
"If you need to borrow anything sis, don't worry about it." Gamzee said, still smiling. "I have extra clothes if you want them."
Nepeta looked him up and down and giggled. "No offense, but I don't think your clothes would fit me. You're much too tall!" Then she held her arms out, looking eagerly at the small face poking out of the towel. Gamzee handed over the bundled up kitten with a smile, and stood to lead Nepeta to the couch. She hopped up and followed, bounding to keep up with his longer strides. He sat down and patted the couch next to him with another grin. She grinned back and sat down gently, being careful of her delicate parcel.
"So where did you all up and find that little guy?" Gamzee asked, pointing at the cat.
Nepeta frowned. "He was in a box that said free kittens, and it looked like the mom HAD been there with them, but abandoned him. I think he was the runt, because he's too old to be drinking milk, though that's how small he looks."
Gamzee didn't ask how she knew this. She had probably given the kitten a full inspection, pushing down on his little paws to make suer his claws were healthy, checking his eyes, ears, nose, mouth, everything she was learning from that online course she was taking on basic vetrinary skills. She was smart enough to be in college, but with all the travelling she and her mother did, they could afford very little luxuries. But Nepeta was always smiling, never once doubting she lived the best life she could ask for. At least she got to be around her parent. Gamzee buried a hand into one of the blankets, clutching at the fabric until he was sure the resentment and  sorrow wouldn't overcome him. Then he sighed at looked at the TV.
"So, any movies you want to watch sis?" Gamzee asked, leaning forward to turn off his game console, and using the remote to flick to onDemand.
Nepeta's phone rang, making them both jump. She lifted it up to her ear.
"Hello?" she chimed. "No. Yes. Eww, no! Hee hee! Purrlease, Equius, I'm fine! No, I'm with Gamzee. Yes, I'm positive. NO! ...Sorry. I meant no... please? Hee hee, okay!"
Each of her little comments came at random intervals. At least, they seemed random to Gamzee, as he was only hearing one side of the conversation. Nepeta hung up then and said, "Equius will pick me up, but I told him not to rush. So we have time for a movie if you want!"
Gamzee grinned. "Sounds motherfucking miracles, sis!"
Nepeta playfully snatched the remote from his hands, and started sifting through movies. She he would be up for any movie, and she was abosolutely right. He just watched as she went to kids, then Disney, then animated. It took some searching, but eventually she found The Aristocats. She laughed and chose it, setting the remote down on the couch. They both chuckled through the beginning. Nepeta hissed when Edgar plotted to remove the cats. Gamzee put an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close. She giggled and rested her head against his chest. He ignored the movie, and instead watched Nepeta's reactions. There were several parts where she started tearing up, but it always subsided. Everytime Gamzee got worried. He didn't want to see his best sis cry, especially not over a movie. He started watching the movie again, and pulled Nepeta a little closer. She nuzzled into him, taking a fistful of his shirt in one of her hands. He gently rubbed her shoulder, making her giggle again. As the movie came to an end, and everything was wrapped up in a nice happy bow, he heard Nepeta's breath hitch. He leaned his head away to get a better look at her. She was smiling, but tears were streaming down her face. He smiled wanly and leaned down to give her a comforting kiss on the top of her head. She looked up at him, a strange glint in her watery eyes. She set the sleeping kitten aside, and sat up to kiss Gamzee on the lips. His eyes went wide, but he didn't question it. He just pulled his arm away
to rest his hand on the back of her neck, playing with the ends of her short hair. Using the grip she still had on his shirt, she pulled him close, tongue dancing on his bottom lip. His eyes fluttered shut and he opened his lips against hers. His other hand went to rest on her hip- which he was quite surprised to find, she really did have. She was usually wrapped up in that coat of hers. But she had a subtle, cute curve to her. Gamzee chuckled and put his other hand on her opposite hip, and lifted her. She gave a shocked squeak as she was placed to sit on his knees, so they were face-to-face.
"Sitting like that would've hurt our necks after awhile sis." Gamzee chuckled.
Nepeta repsonded by kissing him again, her hands resting on his shoulders. He left his hands on her hips and kissed back with more vigor than before, letting all his love flow through the contact. She pulled herself closer, sliding up his thighs. He would've usually blushed, but he liked having her closer. Her phone rang then, and she jerked it out of her jeans pocket. She didn't break the kiss, just dropped the small device on the floor, then replaced her hand onto his chest. Gamzee was dimly aware that the call might be Equius, but whatever. He wasn't about to let that guy stop their moment. The phone beeped, signaling a text. Nepeta gently shook her head, her lips brushing along Gamzee's. He shuddered at the touch and pulled her closer, his tongue dancing with hers. Another beep. Fuck him. Another beep. What was with this guy? Always bugging and fussing and meddling. Gamzee heard a thump that he thought meant the door hit the wall, but he couldn't be sure. That could've been an especially loud thud from his already overactive heart.
"What... in the..." a deep voice snarled from the doorway. Nepeta jumped, breaking the contact. Gamzee's now-empty hands fell into his lap as he gaped at Equius. He was torn between apologizing and kicking the other boy out of his house. Nepeta looked guilty, but there was also an angry twinkle in her eye that told Gamzee she wouldn't be apologizing for her love. "Nepeta. My car." Equius choked out, hands curling in and out of fists.
"Equius, we-" Nepeta started.
"NOW." Equius snapped.
Nepeta hissed and scooped the kitten up, kissing Gamzee on the cheek as she bent down. Then she scurried away, shoving her feet into her shoes and snatching her coat of the rack. She dashed outside and climbed into Equius's truck. Gamzee watched out the huge window, before grabbing Nepeta's phone off the floor and standing. He tossed it, and Equius caught it nimbly.
"I swear to God, if you hurt my dear Nepeta, I-"
"I." Gamzee snarled. "Have no intention to hurt Nepeta. I've been friends with her for years, and nothing could make me leave her. If she chooses to leave me, I'll accept it with good grace."
Equius flinched. It was odd for Gamzee to use such a harsh tone, especially toward one of his close friends. Equius just turned on his heel, lank hair fanning out as he did so, and stormed outside after Nepeta. Gamzee saw her looking out the passenger window, and curled his hands into a heart as he approached the window. She saw him too, and made the shape back.
